a. I began by gathering information from the counselor’s office and the district office. I felt is was important to have all the information needed to complete the IIR. I was able to locate information on the Department of Secondary Education as well. The superintendent was able to direct me to specific locations for the information that would be needed. The district Comprehension and Guidance and School Counseling Program and the state program information was helpful in locating data. I wanted to make certain that the program we had now was aligned with the program standards the state requires. I began task one with my site supervisor. He was helpful to me by sharing the goals of the school, the CSIP goals, board policies, and the district goals as a whole. I collaborated with the teachers to help them understand the goals of the district and the role of the school counseling program.
Section 2, I began to study the state grade level expectation and the goal of the district. It is important for me as a new counselor to assess the needs to see if the past IIR showed signs of improvement for the program. This will guide me in making a change to improve in different areas.
Section 3 individual planning cannot start once the students have reached high school. This section I began by looking back to see what had been done in the previous years with career education. It is vital to include career education in the elementary students and to assist them through high school. Lessons need to be taught from an early age and then built on as they mature. Survey the students on a yearly basis can be helpful in guiding them toward a career development choice. My goal is to work with the teachers and their classroom activities. The teachers were open to each and all of the activities I have planned based on their classroom time available. It is important to reach the needs of the students as well as the respect of the teacher’s classroom teaching time.
Section 5 I looked at the school district’s past CGCP and the community outreach. I will design a needs assessment to help me see the areas that are needed by the students and their families. It is important to work with the community to meet the needs of the family. My job does not end when the student goes home at the end of the day. b. The Overall Section of the IIR score for the district was 85%. This may be due to the lack of an updated Improvement Plan for the district.
Section One was 83%. The student/counselor ratio plans a big part in the score. I am presently the only counselor at the district and we have 419 students Kindergarten to 12th grade and 29 at the pre-kindergarten level. There are very little evaluation results used in the IIR.
