Seizures are becoming more common within classrooms. There are six different types of seizures that have their own effects on a person. Some seizures involve short periods of the student being unresponsive, and others are more intense and involve compulsion. The type of seizure that may occur one day is unknown to the person. Students with epilepsy or any other disability that causes seizures are unaware the seizure may occur, or when it will occur. Seizure related issues could impact a child’s life at home and at school. In a six-month time period, students with epilepsy missed five or more days of school. The teacher acted quickly when she realized what was occurring, and prevent the behavior from happening further. The teacher and myself were extremely unaware if the child was having an absence seizure, or if she was ignoring us because she did not get her way. The seizure continued for few minutes before we were able to determine that it was a seizure. This time gap could’ve been decreased if we were knowledgeable about the signs of an absence seizure. After realizing she was having a seizure, my teacher quickly called the principal, who came to the classroom and determined that it was time to call the hospital. This child was still staring black and was not moving any parts of her body. The child was then rushed to the hospital. A few weeks after this incident, she was taken out of the school by her mother and was to be homeschooled. In the future, I think it is crucial to understand your students, and understand the disabilities that they each posses. If a student has absence seizers, it is important to research information about them, and be very knowledgeable on them. By having knowledge of this form of seizure, the teacher could’ve been able to recognize signs and symptoms of the seizure. Along with that, the child would not have to suffer through the seizure. I think with more knowledge about absence seizures, this situation could’ve been handled much more
