The novel, The War That Saved My Life, is a prodigious tale of a young crippled girl, Ada, whose life changes drastically for the better. Her little brother is shipped off to the country when England joined WWII. Ada runs away, even with her crippled, club foot. She and her brother are taken in by a very nice lady, Susan. Susan takes them in and treats them as her own. She teaches Ada how to ride the pony in the yard, and even how to read and write. The author, Kimberly Brubaker Bradley, uses Ada’s view of the circumstance to further deepen the readers understanding. The novel also portrays theme of self-perseverance, though the acts of Ada. She finds her chance when the government ships off all the children to the country for the start of WWII. She then teaches herself how to walk on her club foot. She explains her hurt as this, “I stood by the chair that first day, wobbling. I slowly shifted some weight from my left foot to my right. I gasped…I let go of the chair. I swung my bad foot out. I pushed my body forward. Pain stabbed my ankle like a knife. I fell down.” (Bradley 9).
