The following self-reflective statement outlines my personal philosophy on teaching and learning within the context of demonstrating the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. Throughout the Internship I have endeavoured to learn and develop my teaching practice to improve outcomes for students and the school community.
My teaching philosophy encompasses the view that children are capable and diverse learners who arrive to the classroom with a range of prior knowledge and learning preferences. In order to value what my students bring to the classroom, extensive profiling assisted in understanding certain characteristics of each student that contributes to their learning. My planning and choice of resources and teaching strategies were then guided by these findings throughout the Internship along with maintaining high yet equitable expectations of each student.

This is why profiling and diagnostic and formative assessment throughout each unit was regularly utilized throughout the Internship to not only guide learning and track student progress, but to also implement differentiated learning programs according to the students’ needs of extension or support/reinforcement. This allowed content to be delivered in a way that was appropriately challenging and engaging to each individual student. Constructive and timely feedback from these forms of assessment ensured students understood how and what is required of them to work towards the Australian Curriculum achievement standards for Year 1 and 2. This feedback is also used for reporting later in the semester. Throughout the Internship I have learnt to approach the planning and sequencing of learning programs with fluidity and flexibility as content is extended or reinforced according to findings from consistent assessment
