They may have been rivals that never met, but it was the combined endeavors of Sergei Korolev and Wernher von Braun that started the space age. Sergei Korolev served as the chief rocket and spacecraft designer of the soviet union during the cold war from 1946 to his death in 1966. Korolev was extremely important and irreplaceable during the space race, so much so that his identity was kept secret until years after his death. During his career he accomplished many milestones, such as the first manned space flight and putting the first satellite into orbit. Korolev is considered by many to be "the father of modern astronautics".

Wernher von Braun was a Nazi rocket scientist, who after World War II defected to the United States. While working for the Nazis von Braun created the revolutionary V-2 rocket. In America von Braun served as director of the newly formed Marshall Space Flight Center. While working there von Braun was credited with many major American victories during the space race, such as the Explorer satellite and the Apollo program. Von Braun is considered by many to be "the Father of Rocket Science". Once the Soviet Union developed hydrogen bombs they needed a way to send them to America.
