What appealed to me were the sections explaining the domains of the heart. I have read another book on servant leadership, but really enjoyed the insights into cultivating the spirit and mind of a servant leader. I believe that as modern-day professionals we fail to take the time to reflect and ask ourselves the important questions. In pursuit of our personal career goals or those imposed on us, we think and act in a self-serving manner. The priority is often meeting the goal at any cost and making ourselves look good even when we have performed poorly. Taking credit for the success of our subordinates and blaming them when failures occur. Our focus on self edges out God and we reflect that in our leadership making decisions based on pride and fear. Choosing to lead like Jesus, we can practice forgiveness and grace first with ourselves and then with those we serve. Instead of encouraging and helping my peers to learn more about projects that I am in charge of, I tend to keep the information to myself. I need to plan for the day when I may move on from my position and they will assume my responsibilities. It would be also be to my benefit and the organizations if I train others and help them to learn new skills. Granted some of my peers are not interested in learning new skills, but I could teach two of them.
