”Sexual assault is a far too common problem in our country today; RAINN (the Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network) recently reported that someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted every 98 seconds.”(Realities) On college campuses 11.2% of all students experience rape or sexual assault. But what constitutes sexual assault? “Sexual assault, a type of sexual violence, is a term that applies to a broad range of forced and unwanted sexual activity.”(Realities) Sexual Assault is considered anything from unwanted sexual touching, and fondling, to rape. Including any kind of penetration to a person's body against their will. “Forcing someone into non-consensual sexual acts by way of manipulation, physical/emotional coercion, or psychological force, including threats or other means of intimidation.” (Realities).

This describes “a situation where someone who isn’t directly involved steps in to change the outcome. Stepping in may give the person you’re concerned about a chance to get to a safe place or leave the situation.” (RAINN) A bystander could be in a bar, and witness a man hitting on a woman who has had too much to drink. If the bystander would then approach the man, and cause a 30 second distraction, anything to disrupt the moment. It might give the women a minute to sober up or to get to a safer location. Bystander Intervention is not about trying to be someone's hero or a way to stand out from the crowd, because you may or may not be able to change the outcome of the situation.
