Taking a Stand Against Date Rape and College Sexual Assault What is assault might you ask? Assault is when someone makes a stride to make a physical attack on someone or something. The statistics of women and men being sexually assaulted in college is a dramatic difference. 1 in 5 women report their assault, while 1 in 6 men report theirs during time in college. Based on the statistics, things need to change. In all colleges, there needs to be stricter rules and regulations to follow when assault is committed. It is reported that male students in college commit more sexual assaults than female students. Punishments differ from state to state. In California, “conviction with a possible sentence of 24, 36, or 48 months along with a $10,00 possible fine,” (“Sexual Assault Penalties and Sentencing”). In New York, “constitutes a class D felony…the judge choses jail time between minimum and maximum number of years,” (“Sexual Assault Penalties and Sentencing”). But when the case goes to a federal court it is different – “Federal court sets a minimum of 20 years prison time and fines on top of that,” (“Sexual Assault Penalties and Sentencing”) which seems like a very harsh punishment but in reality they deserve it, due to their actions. Brock Turner was a Stanford University swimmer that had sexually assaulted an unconscious woman: “Prosecutors requested Turner be sentenced 6 years in prison…but a Santa Clara judge stated that because of Turner’s age and lack of criminal history, he acted on imposing a six month jail sentence, with probation, and also had to register as a sex offender,” (“Outrage Over 6-Month Sentence for Brock Turner in Stanford Rape Case”).
