I Didn’t Sign Up For This
There are many women that are raped, but “numbers don’t begin to tell the whole story” (“Rape and Sexual Assault”). Universities and the Military can do more to help prevent rape on their campus and base. Acts like Title IX and Violence Against Women Act can be enforced further more at colleges. There’s even psychology behind why males in groups attack lone females. Also, the staff and students can help prevent rape from happening; especially coaches, leaders of fraternities, and chief commanders can inform athletes, fraternity brothers, and sergeants about rape because they are usually the perpetrators in rape circumstances. Fraternity brothers, athletes, and military leaders are three main perpetrators that rape women because they all share some type of connection between each other.
The U.S. Department of Education for Civil Rights’ “mission is to ensure equal access to education and promote educational excellence throughout the nation through vigorous enforcement of civil rights” (“U.S. Department of Education”). Through Title IX universities receive federal funds and in return they are supposed to address sexual violence and other forms of sex discrimination. They may end up with asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, or diabetes. According to the article, “Rape and Sexual Assault” victims may suffer from chronic pain, headaches, and different sleeping habits. Also, they develop the risk of having and spreading sexually transmitted infections. Some mental problems, rape survivors may acquire are depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
