President Obama and leaders of universities came together to create the “It On Us” campaign against sexual assault on college campuses. The campaign wants everyone to assume responsibility and realize that we can all do something to stop sexual assault. There is a culture of silence at college campuses when it comes to sexual assault, and that is a major issue because it leads to victims blaming themselves and not reporting the incident. “It On Us” wants all universities to step forward and take action towards fighting sexual assault.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention, reported that prevention efforts should decrease sexual assault, and that they have identified two programs that have shown to prevent sexual violence perpetration, students need to be educated on how to be a positive bystander rather than a negative one. Many prevention programs have been implemented in order to cut the rates of sexual assault, some through research prove to be successful. While Dr. DeGue is correct, the prevention programs do serve more than just reducing the risk of those that participate in the program. Charlene Y.
