Politics, race and religion are often closely tied into issues of diversity. The discussion of sexual diversity and identity issues beyond gay and lesbian in our society is a topic that many feel uncomfortable talking about for fear of being labelled intolerant, but having an opposing point of view doesn’t make you intolerant, you can accept people for who they are without agreeing with their beliefs, that is tolerance.

Research shows that just a couple of years ago, only half of 500 major Australian companies gave their employees any training regarding gender identity concerns (Recorded; Human Rights Campaign). Not having knowledge on how to recognise someone’s physical or presentational characteristics, can lead to individuals not feeling accepted in society.

Recognised research shows that 1.7% of the world population are born intersex or hermaphrodite, but generally there are two genders, male and female. The picture can only be perceived one way, it can only be accepted not rejected. This creates a controversial debate on which is right or wrong. The visual medium displays that my point of view is wrong, that humans have separated the conscience mind from the body because we know that our consciousness is a higher function that exceeds the physical realm. It expresses that even though I may be a male that doesn’t mean my penis is me, it just means that my conscience happens to occupy a body of the male sex – which is compatible.
