This work therefore aims at outlining the chronological evolution of same sex sexuality in the United States and its assessment in the present world as argued out by Leila J. Many philosophers such as Karl Marx have built upon theories regarding human nature, including our sexuality to further explain who is in control of power, who is being marginalized and how human sexuality intersects with other axes of power such as race, gender and class that produces societies norms. Although Marx did not have much to say in regards to sex, he believed that human nature, including our sexuality, is shaped by society and as a result changes historically.
But, how it changed the beliefs, values, behavior and attitudes about male dominance figure point in society overall. The co-authors Mary Lamanna, Agnes Riedman and Susan Stewart in “FSW 261, Miami University” shows how early America patriarchal society mindset has changed due to the progression of sexual freedoms and liberties equalities for all genders and races in America. The Sexual Revolution movement in the 1960’s proved how expressive sexuality among the genders to express emotional feelings and not solely based on biological factors to reproduce and have offspring but to enjoy it and build their intimacy between two people. (p. 86-86) The movement from conservative style of choice of sexuality to freedom of choice among society has brought severe consequences with them as well for the individual, couples, and families overall.
Alfred Charles Kinsey altered the way in which people of the twentieth century understood homosexuality. This created a great deal of discussion and controversy that became an enduring part of American culture, which introduced the world into viewing homosexuality as customary. Historian Dagmar Herzog supports Alfred Charles Kinsey’s findings by observing Europeans reactions to Kinsey’s report in comparison to Americans reactions. Historian Dagmar Herzog argues what Kinsey accomplished was phenomenal, he took ordinary people and the rage and intensity of their sexual longings and the diversity of their actual sexual practices seriously as no one had done before (Herzog, 2006). People's way of thinking is strongly influenced by the patriarchal scheme of the culture in which they live, and their judgments deriving from this scheme are deeply embedded in their psyche. Gender roles within patriarchal society prescribe the hierarchical roles of men and women assumed to be “natural,” and labeled as “masculine” and “feminine” as if these categories were ontological. In this context, the heterosexual majority regards homosexuals as those who transgress traditional gender roles and thus violate the prescribed rules of the “proper” sexual behavior. It is being supposedly said that gender identity such as masculinity and femininity is not something inherent you born with but, a learned entity, a social construction. The 1920s, led by the youth, was a restless time. Americans were tired of the moral restrictions of previous generations and the progressive reform a decade earlier. The “roaring twenties” were exemplified by new economic prosperity, social/cultural changes, and advances in technology. During the 1920s, many Americans challenged traditional ideas of acceptable or proper behavior; this marked the start of the sexual revolution.
There has been an evaluation of sexual behavior over the past centuries, and it has demonstrated that there were acts that were considered taboo, homosexuality, bestiality and so on. Due to the emergence of most of the cultures, the history of sexual behavior shows an increase in the collective supervision of sexual abuse, moral codes were developed in the process. The sexual activity of some cultures have been “detailed in art, literature, poetry, mythology, and theater”(pg. 24). Even same-sex behavior was actually displayed in visual arts.
The 1920’s is traditionally viewed as an era for the freedom of sexual identity, but some critics such as Elise McDougald, argue that such freedoms raised unforeseen dangers for African American women (Monda 24) since being sexual was directly linked to satisfying racist notions (Scheper 682). In the eyes of white America, the African American ethnicity was teeming with ghosts of “barbarism” (Dawahare 23) that bled directly into the sexual lives of African American women, creating a racist expectation that all African American women are sexually “hypersexual, primitive, exotic, and always available.” In Larsen’s Quicksand, Helga Crane struggles with this racist and sexist “primitive” expectation (Scheper 682) as she attempts to explore her
Society, is the body that is composed of individuals or communities who share a set of familiar religion, norms, values, cultural or political beliefs or practices. But society does not always stay the same, it is constantly changing due to significant events, that influences social beliefs or practices to change. The significance of family, marriage, sexuality, and homosexuality are some of practices or beliefs that has changed over the centuries. In modern society, family and marriage are still important but, because of the growing desire of independence, it is something does not hold the same value as compared to the Medieval Times. Sexuality and homosexuality are similar beliefs that has notably changed contrast to the Medieval Ages.
What differentiates medicine from the majority of the other courses derives from our lack of complete understanding of the subject, and its influence in every aspect of our lives. I view medicine as an open field with many exciting opportunities yet ahead of it. Having come from a disadvantaged background, my passion for medicine stems from my desire to help progress the world and provide equal opportunities for all. I believe there is no gift greater than the gift of giving, and hope to be able to use a career as a doctor to alleviate the unnecessary suffering of others, particularly those whom need it most. The nature of the medicine course excites me as not only will it be challenging; it would be both stimulating and rewarding.
