Language Arts 7 Sharks vs. Dolphins Did you know that there are several differences between dolphins and sharks.? Dolphins are air breathing mammals while sharks are a species of fish, and are not mammals. Sharks breathe in the very little air that is in water. They do have a few similarities as well. They are similar in that they both hunt for food and they both swim. I would like to share some facts about how they are alike and different. Sharks have triangular teeth with jagged edges. They can open their mouth very wide when getting ready to bite their prey. Sharks have ears on the sides of their head. They have two nostrils on the snout. Sharks use gills to take in oxygen to breathe. A shark has rough skin to protect it from injury. They have large crescent shaped tails and a pair of pectoral and pelvic fins. Sharks hunt in the evening time. They eat fish, squids, plankton, and other things like tires, whatever they can fit into their mouth usually. The top fin is curved or hooked. They have a long triangular body. Male dolphins are square headed. Females have rounded heads. They have soft smooth skin. They have great eyesight but have difficulty seeing the fish on the ocean floor. They use echolocation to find fish on the ocean floor. They eat a variety of fishes and invertebrates. Dolphins are smart, playful, and gentle. They can live up to 25 to 35 years old in the wild. Dolphins live in small groups called pods. They talk to each other by squeaks, and squeals, and whistles. They work together to catch their prey. The dolphins body temperature is always 97 degrees
