" Ever since the start of social media in 1997, there has been one question that remains a constant: ""Who should be able to monitor internet content and how much should they be able to see?"" People to this day argue over who should see what and just how much should be seen, and that is why I am even here writing this essay. This important discussion has yet to reach an end, and to have a voice, you need to speak out in the first place. So, saying that, the government should not be able to monitor someone's social media and internet content unless there is an investigation and they have good reason to be monitoring it. If there is a reason to view the internet content of a person, it should only be if the person has a criminal record or has been reported (with good reason). They should not be able to monitor someone's internet content just because they want to, or to fit an agenda they may have. In the end, there are very few reasons the government should be looking into a person's internet content. Next, when discussing what the state should be able to see, it should follow the same basic rules the government should be following. No viewing someone's content just because they want to or to fit an agenda. A person's content should only be looked into if they have a criminal record or have been reported (with good reason). Lastly, when speaking about what a school should see of a student's content, it becomes a little different. The school should be able to see what the students are doing on their school computers (if the school has any), but should not be able to see what is on the student's phone without good reason. If a case of bullying were to be reported, then they would be able to monitor the internet content of the perpetrator. If a student's phone were to be taken up, though, that does not warrant the school staff to look through the phone and viewing its
