Sherwood Middle School students are not allowed to chew gum in school. The district decided that gum should not be allowed in school. They think that gum will cause a sticky mess and popping will cause a distraction. There are both pros and cons to the no chewing gum in school rule. Gum helps some people , but some people use it irresponsibly. Some people think that gum in school should be allowed, while others not so much. Different people have different reasons why they think gum should be allowed or not. In Sherwood, students cannot chew gum in class.
The Sherwood School District decided that gum would create too much of a distraction to be able to allow it in school. The district thinks that gum will be too adhesive. Gum helps focus in school better. Nyssa Peck, a thirteen year old girl attending Sherwood Middle School, says, “gum has been proven to increase scores. So that makes me think that it would be okay to have in class, as long as people were responsible and didn’t stick it under desks.” Gum can be too distracting. Popping, trading, and chewing gum can cause loud noises and make people not pay attention. With gum, like everything else, there are pros and cons.
Everybody has a story on why they think gum should be allowed or not. Some people think gum should be allowed. Kylie Kramer, also a thirteen year old girl SMS student, states “I don’t think that they have a good enough reason not to let us chew gum. The pros outweigh the cons.” But other people disagree. Ms. Kittel, a substitute teacher at SMS, states that “I think it can be a privilege, but gum doesn’t help anyone, and can be distracting. Have you ever sat in a quiet classroom and had somebody pop gum? It’s nerve wracking.” There are reasons why some people agree, while others don’t
