Should New York State Use Renewable Energy Resources?

891 Words4 Pages

There are two types of energy resources; renewable energy and non-renewable energy. Coal, nuclear oil and natural gas are nonrenewable energy resources. These are available in limited supplies. These resources take a long time to be restored. On the other hand, there are five renewable energy resources; solar, wind, water (hydro), biomass and geothermal. Going back in time, years ago, since the beginning of humanity, people have used renewable resources. In today’s society the use of renewable sources has become very major. These sources have a great impact on the community, economy and the environment in various ways. Wind, solar, biomass and geothermal energy sources are important and have a specific usage. New York is a major use of these …show more content…

By using renewable resources, these emissions could be minimized. This will create a friendlier, safe and less hazardous environment. More benefits include; enrichment of public health, because harmful emissions cause pollution to the atmosphere. This has contributed to breathing issues, heart disease, cancer and several other health issues.
The degree to which New York State uses renewable resources is quite important. 23% of the electricity generated by New York is from renewable resources according to the New York State Department of environmental Conservation. This usage has allowed the state to be the 5th largest user of this source of energy In the States. Moreover, New York currently uses wind, solar, hydroelectric and …show more content…

The turbines are moved by air and it simultaneously generates energy. New York is the eleventh in the nation in wind power use. For solar power, there is technology that captures energy from the sun to generate electricity without using mechanical equipment. New York ranks seventh in the US in solar energy generation. Hydroelectric power generated in New York comes from large power plants, which generate several hundred megawatts of power. Its is known that 10% of the nations energy is generated by hydroelectric power. Usually hydroelectric power plants utilizes a dam on a river to store water in aa reservoir. The energy comes from the falling of water from the stored reservoir which spins the turbines to generate electricity. New York ranks fourth in the US in hydroelectric power generation. When we take biomass into consideration, there are several ways it could produce electricity too. One way is to burn biomass directly, heat water to steam and then send it through a steam turbine which in turn wil generate electricity. Another way is combustion; this is done through the usage of biogas that contains high concentration of methan from organice materials such as food waste and manure, also burning of plant materials such as wood.
Even though usage of renewable resources in New York is creditable, It is not the main source of energy
