Romeo and Juliet should no longer be assigned in school By Liliene Anderson I am a student at Rock Canyon Highschool. In my English class, we read Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Originally I was excited to read it. No kid grew up without hearing about how wonderful and romantic their love story was. But, as soon as I started reading Romeo and Juliet I realized I should not have been excited. While reading it, I couldn’t help but think Why are we reading this book? It is outdated, sexist, and it makes incredibly inappropriate jokes. I’m not talking about the sex jokes I’m talking about the jokes about rape and the objectification of women. Romeo the character we are meant to admire goes as far as to say that a woman's beauty was wasted because she chose to remain a virgin. Romeo thought that the woman was a waste of women because if she never has sex she can never have children and pass on her beauty. Is this what women should be reduced to? An object, whos only meant to have kids and share her beauty with her husband. Yes, this story may be set in the past but where are the conversations about it? Who’s saying this is not how we treat people? No one. Not treating people that way may seem like common sense but boys use the comments from this play and others to internally justify and fuel their objectification of girls. Their brief relationship is meant to be seen as a romantic tragedy. It is supposed to show beautiful love between two people. Instead, it shows and encourages an incredibly toxic relationship. Romeo and Juliet's relationship is toxic. They rely on each other and believe that their relationship is the only thing they will ever need. In total their relationship only lasted three to four days. In that short span of time, they lost their families and they lost their strongest relationships for their new romance. To be in a healthy relationship you should not give up your other relationships to be with your romantic partner. Juilet lost her closest relationship, with the Nurse. Juliet was already struggling with her mental health and losing her most stable relationship caused her to lose the last bit of reasoning she had.
