Same-sex relationships have been an ongoing controversial issue for decades. The discussion around it has heightened recently due to laws being passed pertaining to same-sex couples. These new laws allow same-sex couples to marry and adopt legally. However, many people do not believe that these couples should be able to raise children. Allowing same-sex couples to raise children is said to have a negative effect on the child. Some people believe that same-sex couples are less capable than heterosexual couples. The main concern that many people voice is about the child not having both a father and mother figure in their lives. Hitchins said that she had more of a hard time handling the transition than her son. When talking about her son, Alex, Hitchin’s face lit up. She said even though he was put through quite a lot at the beginning of their relationship, he was a great kid and adjusted extremely well. There were never any reports of bullying or change in his character due to him having lesbian moms. As we wrapped up the interview, she added that some of the negative opinions that people have towards same-sex couples raising children are from a learned behavior. Society, which influences a lot of behavior and opinions, has not been the most welcoming to the topic. The negativity towards gay parents raising children is not always one’s opinion on the relationship, it is just all they were taught. She ended the interview by clarifying that although there are a lot of people who believe that being raised by same-sex parents is different than having heterosexual parents, it is not; her child is no different than any other child who was raised by a mother and
