Courtney Stawarz says, “Sports are important, I understand that. However, Elizabeth Kolbert has a valid argument.” She says, while Americans tend to put more emphasis on sports rather than learning, it is not the children that are at fault. She sees how sports are related to grades being you have to make sure you are eligible to play. Children have to watch their grades in order to be able to play sports in schools.
Have sports teams brought down America’s schools? Would grades skyrocket if sports were removed from schools? Or would they plummet to the ground? According to the article, “Have Sports Teams Brought Down America’s Schools” by Elizabeth Kolbert we’d be better off leaving sports separate from our schools. Millions of students across the U.S. are involved in some type of sport through their school.
According to " The Case Against High-School Sports" (2013), sports could create some study, health, and time management problems for schools and students. In this post, Amanda Ripley initially shows the benefits when involving in the high-school sports: exercise, sportsmanship lessons, some positive personalities, more fun and staying away from vices. She also writes some tales to inform readers that in the US, students are interested and enjoy in sports more than other peers in other countries. However, she claims that the high-school sports have negative effects on schools and students. Next, she gave some schools ' examples to show the problems when schools and students spent too much time and money in high-school sports.
I think that if the school cut all the sports programs that everyone who plays them would get really mad. And not only the players would be mad but the fans and people that like to watch them would also be very upset. This is why I would be for it because the players already whine enough but if they got there sports taken away we would never here the end of it. So that and also the money made for the sports program alone makes most of our schools money from people paying to get into the games. Some of the other reasons that the school should not cut the sports program is that’s how the school makes most of its money and they can’t save if they don’t have money coming in.
The first reason why middle schools should have sports teams is that it can improve academic performance. For example in the article “The pros and cons of sports for middle schools” by public school review the author writes that “a recent study done by the University of Kansas showed a link between physical activity and academic performance.” The study also showed “the student athletes had higher gpas and a 10% higher rate for graduating high school.” In other words when athletes play sports there is a connection to a student's test scores improving. Boosting academic performance is good because opponents argue that sports takes over a teens life and they don't focus on enough school.
In this community lately, there has been discussion lately on sports possibly being removed from the high schools. Although, they get the most recognition that does not mean that just because one little thing it gets removed and completely forgotten about. In fact, so many people do high school sports in the text “Are High School Sports Good For Kids” it explicitly states “Here in Michigan almost 300,000 young people take part in high school sports every year.” This scene particularly shows that many youth athletes participate in high school sports in only one state alone.
When everybody argues enough and then schools decides to keep sports their should be a fee of that parents have to pay for buses, and players have to pay for half of their uniform, and then the school pays for the other half. Don’t you think? The problem is that schools think that keeping sports is a financial burden and that sports bring down students academics. Schools should not get rid of sports because school sports help improve academics, sports can bring a community together, and sports can reveal character. Schools should not get rid of sports because sport programs help test and academics.
High school sports are valued around the United States. They can be a big part of school spirit, and may even affect the school you choose to go to. Two articles: one from The Atlantic, and one from The Huffington Post have conflicting opinions on the subject of high school sports. The article against sports by Amanda Ripley, was written to persuade US citizens that sports should be limited or fully removed from high schools. The article in support of sports by Kai Sato was written in response to the negative article, intended to critique that author in specific.
High School Sports Should be Funded Every year 300,000 students are participating in sports (Gould 1). The School District has been funding the athletics program, which has been benefiting many of the students’ lives for several years. The discontinuation of high school sports will cause many students to loose the health, social and educational benefits provided by participating in athletics. The School District should continue to fund sports because they benefit students.
The stress can get so intense, it feels paralyzing. That’s why it is important than ever for schools to invest in their athletic programs,” states the sports article “Should Schools get rid of Sports.” Schools should keep their sports programs because they help improve academics, help improve mental and emotional health, and improves social skills like being on a team. Schools should not get rid of their sports programs because they help with student’s academics.
I feel like they should continue the fund for school sports. Funding the school sports help the kids that want to do sports, it also helps other people get active. If they were to stop funding, then the schools won't be able to do the sports. If the schools don't have sports then a lot of people wouldn't be so active and that's not what the schools would want. It also wouldn't be so good for the schools.
The first reason that you should get rid of school sports is the health risks that playing can impose. The rate of concussions for people age 14-19 have tripled in the last decade, rising from 7,000 to 22,000 ER visits per year. A concussion is a serious head injury, a concussion left untreated can lead to brain damage, liver problems, and depression. A concussion leaves a child more susceptible to other injuries and can cost up to $30,000 for 6 months of treatment. Sports impose the threat of severe injuries upon its players, do you want to see your students suffer because of a game?
Students, what if the school told you that you had to play sports without an option. How would you feel about this? Would you think that it’s fair to everyone, including yourself? This could be a good idea to increase physical activity.
Sports can enhance the cooperative and strategic strategies. The passage states that, “understanding the competitive process entails an appreciation of the social nature of competition, particularly with regard to the cooperative and strategic aspects of sports and an awareness of the nature of individual roles within a cooperating group.” The last reason, which it the academic benefits, proves that you shouldn’t take away the sports for school. The kids that play sports benefit in the classroom a lot more than regular students.
Some may argue that playing sports in high school will take time away from academics. Sports can consume a lot of time and energy at the expense of school work and some feel that this can cost
