Waiting four or five months for an answer, which when obtained requires five or six more to explain it” Paine is frustrated by a time lag to ask for king and parliament to address their opinions. So if the colonists formed their own independent country, they would not have to wait for a response from their goverment. The patriots love local control. In their protests the patriots wanted to tax themselves, so if they form an independent country then they could do just that action. This is how we have been ruled for generations. He’s also saying that if this hadn’t happen the people would be more happy. Their rights are being stripped from them and they will end up under total control of the king if they don’t take a stand. They think that if anyone who signs the resolutions for independence can be guilty of treason.
