Many children have unhealthy eating habits and this is because schools provide their students with unhealthy school lunches, junk food and sugar-sweetened beverages in the vending machines. As a result, the Standard American Diet is increasing, causing heart diseases, diabetes, cancer, and other health problems. The school board should make changes to increase better eating habits. The purpose of this proposal is to inform the school board that the school lunches and unhealthy vending machines affect the health of the students, and to persuade the school to make changes that will prevent these unhealthy eating habits. The faculty does not care about the health of the children. In order to make changes for the benefit of the students, the school district should be informed. In the article “No Lunch Left Behind”, Alice Waters and Katrina Heron provide data on the school lunches that students receive. The school lunches do not provide enough vitamins and nutrients for their students. Instead, the students are fed frozen foods that are reheated such as pizza, nachos, and chicken strips. They reveal that the “options includes high-fat, low-grade meals and cheeses and processed foods like chicken nuggets and pizza” (3). It is harder for students to stay focused in class when they are not given the right amount of nutrients. Many students also refuse to eat the school lunches because of how unhealthy they are. Children who oftentimes skip lunch tend to have a hard time focusing in class. I personally understand how this feels like during my fifth class of the day. However, I do not have a sixth period which makes it bearable for me to wait until I get home to eat. It is harder for students who skip lunch and have six classes throughout the day, and affects how attentive they are in class. These students need organic foods in their system, not processed
