There is a big debate on whether To Kill a Mockingbird should be read in classrooms. The author of this book is Harper Lee. The novel is written from Scout’s, the main character, perspective. I feel strongly that this book should be allowed to be read in classrooms for many reasons. The first reason why I defend this novel is because it is educational. To Kill a Mockingbird is a fictional novel. Although this is true, the novel gives realistic insight to how lives were back in the time of the book. The text shows how discrimination was by stating, “A very poor white girl named Mayella Ewell, a member of the notorious Ewell family, who belong to the layer of Maycomb society that refers to people as ‘trash.’” By stating this, one can tell how people were so hateful and mean, and it, also, compares to people today. It states in the text that “Atticus takes a case involving a black man named Tom Robinson who has been accused of raping a very poor white girl.” He does this because he believes that the man is innocent. This shows good morals because protecting the innocent is a good thing to do. Another good moral involved in the story is the act of kindness. Boo Radley leaves gifts in a tree for the kids in the story. He also puts a blanket around Scout when she is standing outside in the cold. As one can see, good morals is a good reason why I defend this book and why I think other people should
