Should We Use The Metric System Essay

We in California, are used to measuring with Inches and Feet, as opposed to Meters. In fact, there are only three countries in America still using the English Imperial System (United States, Liberia, and Burma all use the Imperial System). I personally believe that we in the US should be using the metric system as well!
For beginning my argument of why we should use the metric system as opposed to the English Imperial system, the metric system is more universally used. As states above, there are only three countries that still use the English measurement system - therefore we are falling behind! It also has fewer numeric anomalies, like the difference between inches, yards, and feet. There isn’t as much to remember, and it’s easier to learn …show more content…

The metric system measures using different tools, therefore there are more opportunities to get closer to the root of the measurement. If you’re measuring something in inches, and then need to change it to the metric system, then you’re more likely to make a minor mistake (that could end up causing a huge difference in the final result). We learned in class about a minor mistake that was made (more like a miscommunication) because one person wasn’t clear about what kind of measurement they were using to measure and weigh; If we all used the same kind of measurement, we wouldn’t have to worry about such problems. In 1999, NASA was experimenting with a Mars Orbiter , and they assigned each person what they needed to calculate. No one specified what measurement system they were using, so the team used whatever system they were used to. NASA lost a Mars orbiter because one team used metric units for a calculation and the other team didn’t. If the whole world was used to using one certain kind of Measurement System, (preferably the metric system, because it’s more accurate and leaves room for less mistakes) we can be more preventative in having the same problem happen
