In the passage “The Word Police” by Michiko Kakutani, there is great tone emphasized throughout the article. However, in the fifth paragraph of the article, Kakutani has some certainly strong, overwhelming tone. Kakutani first establishes their opinion with an appeal that there is an impulse to find political correctness, saying that “Certainly no decent person can quarrel with the underlying impulse behind political correctness…”. This general assumption implies that every decent person knows that there is some urge to be politically correct and that anyone who does not know this, is not a decent person. Kakutani then goes on to use pathos to say that these opinions can either make or break someone.
In Zeitoun, Eggers does not only promote awareness of social injustices but uses pathos: an appeal to emotion, ethos: an appeal to credibility, and logos: an appeal to logic, to show Zeitoun’s experience during Hurricane Katrina and post-9/11. When Zeitoun is being imprisoned at Camp Greyhound because he was accused of being a terrorist, Eggers specifically described by using powerful imagery the horrible conditions that took place such as the forced strip-downs, being sprayed with toxic gas, and being abused by the soldiers. Eggers also uses ethos to show Zeitoun's credibility in his neighborhood by helping stray dogs, saving lives of many people on his street, and his excellent work performance. Turpin was fired after he was found guilty of. ” Unlawful or unnecessary exercise of authority.” Turpin had faced two criminal trials for assaults against prisoners, but before his down fall he was a decorated officer who received commendations in 2005 for saving a hostage.

She brings out to light many aspects of corruption that are not regarded as corruption but considering their nature they qualify to be referred to as corruption. Even still, reporters face more challenges in the form of manipulation by sources such as politicians and experts with agendas. In the case of Jessica Lynch, the Iraq War, and today’s news coverage, viewers can see that the media, the military, and politicians all can play a role in distorting reality or creating myth.
