Sigmund Freud was one of the most influential figures in psychology and he brought many ideas to light throughout his career. One of his greatest accomplishments would have to be the discovery of psychoanalysis and the theory of the unconscious mind. Despite his accomplishments he was a very controversial figure in his time. He uncovered many theories that no one else would even think of doing. Freud has played a great role in development and personality throughout his life. A little bit of background about Freud's early life may be helpful in understanding him better. The main point of this therapy is to bring unconscious and repressed thoughts out to the conscious. He would do that by asking his patients to talk about dreams, thoughts they have, or really anything they want to talk about. This therapy would help get a more deeper understanding of things. Around 1900 Freud started to develop an idea of the mind. He believed there was an unconscious and a conscious part of the mind. He compared this theory to an iceberg. The tip of the iceberg is the conscious and the rest of the iceberg under water is the unconscious. He later modified this representation to be more specific. He added the id, super-ego, and the ego. A main point to Freud’s viewpoint is that behavior is instinctive. People do things and develop in certain ways based on their instincts. According to his theory the id begins to develop very early on in childhood. The id is what you desire. This is shown in almost every child. If they want something they are not going to stop crying until they get what they want. The id is mostly correlated with the bad things that you do. Things that are selfish, things that will make you happy and not considering anyone else. The next part of Freud’s theory of personality is the superego which is supposed to be the moral side of a person. This is the part of your personality that does the right thing and is the socially responsible part of the your personality. Then you have the ego.
