Sigmund Freud was a neurologist know for developing theories on psychoanalysis. He was a psychologist and had a big influence on how we see personality today. Freud used the idea of an unconscious in order to understand how and why people act the way that they do. The goal of his work was to understand the human psychological development and a lot of what is known about personality come from his research.
Sigmund Freud developed a psychoanalytic theory of personality through development. The data for his theory came from extensive cast studies on his patients that were diagnosed with hysteria. They were typically women with a history of traumatic sexual experience. His data also came for self-analysis from his various experiences. He used his patents to design the Freudian Theory. The theory was based on dividing personality into three parts that all link to one another. His theory was built on the unconcise and that people did not really understand why they acted a specific way. Understanding this is the key to the psychoanalytic perspective (Burger). Everything that you did would always link back to something in your unconscious. Everything related back to an instinct to live or an instinct to die. To make this theory systematic every action in life was either because you wanted to live or because you wanted to die, even if you did not know it due to the fact that it is barred in your unconscious.
A hole in The Freudian Theory of Personality is that not everyone can be hypnotized. When Freud realized this he had to start making concessions and reevaluating his theory. It is hard to test the idea of the unconscious mind. However, his ideas became the stepping stones for growth in the understanding of the
