Any student picturing Harvard from a scorecard would be amazed but oblivious to the ever-looming requirements that plague a student throughout the years of study. In John Schoen’s “Why does College cost so much?”, he unpacks many ideas on the topic of tuition. In the reading, he uses Harvard, the school that raised tuition a substantial amount in 1971, as an example. The university justified the increase in tuition on rising inflation, which the article continued to state that tuition and inflation were not synonymous. Presently, Harvard charges roughly $45,000 a semester. If inflation were the reason for raising tuition cost, then students would only be paying an estimated amount of $15,000 a semester according to research and inflation models.
The level of education at both can be summed up with the idea that, “Howard is the Harvard for HBCUs.” Both have IVY League Schools, HBCU Ivy League schools consist of Howard University, Spelman College, Fisk University, Morehouse College, and Tuskegee University. PWI Ivy League schools consist of Yale Uuniversity, Harvard University, and Princeton University. At both HBCU and PWI, there Ivy league schools provide a more rigorous college experience, gifting students with an experience and opportunity to learn at a higher level. Roger Williams currently has two campuses, the one in Bristol RI, and the one in Providence RI. Roger Williams University could utilize the Providence campus be expanding it to undergraduate studies. The University could create a system where students decide their housing between either the Providence campus, or the Bristol one, and with that in mind they could then take all their classes at the campus that they are living at. However, this program would only be offered to certain undergraduate programs which could easily transport from campus to campus. This solution does seem to be a bit complicated, but it would be far cheaper that buying new property, or rebuilding a number of old buildings. The Providence campus has a number of new facilities that are barely used throughout the day, facilities that could be used by undergraduate students.
