Edwin Arlington Robinson was a very unrespected poet in his younger years. Robinson went through many difficulties throughout his life. He was a very depressed and sorrowful poet of the late 19th and 20th century who later became a well known poet for many works. Edwin Arlington Robinson was born on December 22, of 1869 in Head Tide, Maine. He was the son of Edward Robinson and Mary Elizabeth Palmer. (Waggoner) Robinson hated the name Edwin Arlington because it was randomly picked by a stranger and is shown the “accidental nature of man's fate.” After Edwin’s birth, he and his family moved to Gardiner and lived in S.W. People in the town called him “incorrigible fisher of words." His neighbors said his greatest delight was “hunting for difficult words throughout the day.” Even though people said Robinson was a shy boy he had many friends that he spent time with. Throughout his years as a child he spent time swimming in the river with the swanton brothers and picking apples with the Rasstow brothers. The first school he attended was Mrs. Morrell's school. Robinson had a highly educated neighbor, which noticed his poetic interests as a high school student by having him do metric exercises. Robinson later attempted to go to public school at Gardiner High school from which he later graduated from. When he was in school he had a childhood crush on his own teacher whose name was Lizzie Austin. When Robinson finally graduated in June 1888 the ceremony was held in the gardiner coliseum. He had a very troubled adult life and he went through many trials that made his work the way it is today. In 1892 his father died which left his family with failing financial support. Robinson's brother later had to return home because of a morphine addiction that made him have failing health. Robinson had to leave Harvard and go back home because of these problems to be closer and help his family (Joyner). In 1896 his mother was diagnosed with “Black Diphtheria” in 1896 which later caused her death that same year. No mortician would handle her body because Robinson’s family did not have the money to pay one. Since no one would handle the body of his mother Edwin and his brother had to bury their mother's body themselves (Preschel). During the death of his mother, Robinson wrote two books which were The Torrent and the Night Before and in 1897 as The Children of the Night. These books were paid for by a few of his good friends to be published. The reviews on these stories did not help Robinson in this time therefore he started spiraling into a depressing state. When he became depressed, he started drinking and becoming like his brothers which worsened his state. Robinson was very close to committing suicide at this time, following the path of his brothers
