This story is a description of two mutually supportive friends ---- a shrewd George, a mild mentally retard Lennie. They work in Weed before , but Lennie always make mistakes, he touches a girl's dress and holds it tightly, the two men has no choices and they must change the jobs. In the ranch which is their new work place, they work hard to complete their dreams that they can have their own farm. George promises to Lennie if he does not get into trouble, he will be able to take care of a litter of rabbits himself. Once Curley, who is the son of boss, has a fight with Lennie, but Curley's fist is crumbed by Lennie in the end. Later Lennie remissly strangles Curley's wife, it infuriates Curley thoroughly. George does not dislike and avoid him, he has been accustomed to Lennie. After all, they have been together for so long time. Quoting: “Oh, I dunno. Hardly none of the guys ever travel together. I hardly never seen two guys travel together. You know how the hands are, they just come in and get their bunk and work a month, and then they quit and go out alone. In my opinion, if Lennie is not together with George, he cannot have a job, no one will take care of him and he cannot support himself. If he makes mistakes, no one will tell him what to do next, he will be caught and killed. But in opposition to Lennie, George will have a better life if he is not together with Lennie. He can have a steady job, he don't have to be worried all the time. He can save money to get

Slim thought it was strange that George was always together with Lennie. Then George told something about Lennie to Slim. Lennie came in, he wanted to hide the pup but George discovered it. Carlson came in and told Candy to kill his old dog, but Candy was loath to part with it. Surprisingly, Slim agreed with Carlson and she said she could give him a little dog. At last, Candy allowed Carlson to kill his dog. Crooks came and told Slim that Lennie was hanging out in the barn petting the puppies too much. Whit engaged George in conversation about Curley's wife. George talked about he and Lennie's dream which they wanted to have their own place to live on, and Candy wanted to join them. When Curley came in, because he thought Lennie was laughing at him, they have a fight. At last, Curley was hurt hardly by Lennie. Slim told Curley to tell that he gets his hand caught in a machine so that Lennie will not be
