“The measure of a superhero is always his nemesis.” – David Lyons. The quote explains that to find a hero's greatness it can be found by looking to their enemy. Just like the heroes of Greece and comic book heroes. Two heroes that can be compared are the classic Greek hero Odysseus of the Odyssey and Batman from the Arkham Knight movies. They both face challenges of fighting extraordinary beings, both being born very fortunate, and experiencing something like hell.
Odysseus and Batman are alike in ways as they show the hero archetype by both fighting supernatural entities. In line 816 of the Odyssey it reads “then scylla made her strike, whisking 6 of my best men from my ship.” The quote shows the encounter of a Greek monster called a scylla. This is important because it describes the scylla killing 6 men. This matters because it describes the type of supernatural odysseus faces throughout the story. In the Batman Arkham Knight trilogy he faces supernatural foes such as Joker and Bang. This means he has to overcome extraordinary beings such as Joker. This matters because these characters have quirks like Joker being insane and trying to spread everyone to the same insanity. In the odyssey it says in line 29 “yet all the gods pitied lord odysseus,”. This means he is a king but also that he gets help from gods. That’s important because it shows how he is seen in society. This matters because it shows how he had a noble birth. Batman was born with rich parents and he was the heir when they got killed. This means he got a lot of money. That’s important because it shows he is financially superior with a cost. This matters because it shows how he is of noble birth. This explains another hero archetype that Batman and Odysseus
