“The Giver” by Lois Lowry and “The Last Dog” by Katherine Paterson are both similar and different. One way the stories are different is in “The Giver” they live in a community and do not have true feelings but in “The Last Dog” the people live in a dome and a machine on their clothes tells them what their feeling. Even though both societies live in a different way they are not the same as are when we live in houses and all have different feelings. One way the stories are similar is both main characters run away, but they run away for different reasons. In “The Last Dog” Brock the main character runs away to explore beyond the dome. Another similarity is in both stories the people in their society are labeled with both numbers and letter. In Brock's society, they get their name and number right when they're made. Each child is made in a lab in a group of 12 and raised there until given to their “parents”. Brokes name is Brock and number is 095670038. In “The Giver” it is totally different. The children are still named and numbered but in a different way. First, the child is born from somebody assigned to be a birthmother. Once the child is born it is cleaned off and sent to the Nurturing Center. Where they are cared for until the ceremony in December. Until the ceremony the child will be called by its number. There are around fifty children born in what they call a year, you get your number in the order your born. Jonas was the nineteenth born in his age group so he was called Nineteen. At the ceremony it goes by “age” so the year you turn or are turning one you are in the group called ones but before that when you do not have your name let you are classified as a new
