The Giver Compare and Contrast Essay
Imagine a lonely, boring place with no freedom of choice, and everything is controlled by a set of rules. That is exact type of community that Jonas, from The Giver lived in. The Giver is a dystopian novel and was written by Lois Lowry in 1993. The book focuses on a boy, Jonas, who has many problems with his community. The movie was released in 2014 which was 21 years after the book. Both the movie and the book on The Giver are portrayed really well and are very detailed. However, the movie still has many differences including the Ceremony of 12, Technology, and the Ending. Though some of these differences may be small, they still change the storyline of the book.
One of the ways the movie is different from the book is the Ceremony of 12. In this ceremony, kids who turned the age of 12 have their special jobs assigned. For example, in the movie, the main characters of the story (Asher, Fiona, and Jonas) are actually 18 years old and they get their jobs assigned at the Ceremony of Advancement. In this ceremony, Asher is actually a drone pilot without playing his role of Assistant Director of Recreation like he did in the book. In addition, Fiona played a role as Nurturer instead of being caretaker of the Old. Jonas is the only character who keeps his original job of Receiver of Memory. These assignments give a different perspective to the book which make it significantly different.

In the book, Jonas’s community is portrayed empty and doesn’t describe any type of technology being used. However, in the movie it describes a load of motorcycles and drones that are zipping past the community which was not mentioned in the book. The movie also depicts special Stirring injections that the characters must take before leaving their homes.
