W.E.B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington were two great leaders of the black community in the late 19th and 20th century. They both had the same intent with their thought but they came from two different backgrounds so it was hard for them to have agreement. Booker T. Washington spent his early childhood in slavery. W. E. B. DuBois grew up both free and in the North. Ergo, he did not experience the harsh conditions of slavery or of southern prejudice he grew up with white Americans and even attended predominately white schools.
Booker T. Washington and W.E.B DuBois were two of the most influential black men that led to the push for civil rights. However, their philosophies differed greatly. They were vocal about their disagreements, and their opposing strategies are still discussed today in discussions regarding ending today’s racism. Booker T. Washington was born a slave, and grew up to be an incredibly influential man. Washington is famous for his inspiring Atlanta Compromise speech, where he spoke about how blacks should respond to racial tensions.
Dubois joined this group of mostly white reformers to undergo this change and eventually this group had a huge impact of the black population. In 1895 Dubois opposed Booker T. Washington on his view of the black population. They agreed on some things such as the progression of black education. Booker T. Washington wanted to move forward by listening to the whites and progressing on their terms.
E. B. DuBois was a white civil rights leader during the nineteenth century. In 1903, DuBois critiqued Booker T. Washington’s “Atlanta Compromise” in an essay called “Of Mr. Booker T. Washington and Others” within his book, The Souls of Black Folk . DuBois asked for political power, insistence on civil rights, and higher education for African Americans. Booker T. Washington’s speech was looked at by many and to the radicals it looked like a “complete surrender of the demand for civil and political equality”(DuBois) for the entire African American population. Abolitionists such as Frederick Douglass and W. E. B. DuBois disagreed with the idea of accommodation and submission.

The area that Dubois agrees with Washington is that African Americans need to increase their knowledge so that they can earn a living. That if African Americans learned a trade, it would help increase “their knowledge of the world”.

Achieving African American Equality Booker T. Washington and W.E.B Du Bois were two of the most influential advocates for African American equality during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (Blatty, 1). Although both men ultimately had the same goal, their methods for achieving African American equality were remarkably different. To begin, the men had conflicting ideas about what constituted as African American equality. Booker T. Washington argued that the accumulation of wealth and the ability to prove that Blacks were productive members of society would be the mark of true equality for African Americans (Painter, 155).

However Booker T. Washington believed in having a more skillful education, consisting of learning how to trade, mastering agriculture skills and more things one would need to get a job. However, W.E.B DuBois also put many efforts to achieve equal rights towards African Americans which Booker T Washington put on hold. Booker T Washington’s plan was to make it so that “Blacks would [have to] accept segregation and discrimination but their eventual acquisition of wealth and culture would gradually win for them the respect and acceptance of whites”. This vision that Booker T Washington had “practically accepts the alleged inferiority of the Negro race”. W.E.B commented on this process saying it was an attempt, “to educate black boys and girls simply as servants and underlings.”
DuBois, on the other hand, criticizes Washington's approach is his book, Soul of Black Folks. DuBois argues that Washington’s approach to achieving racial equality is based on industrial education, southern compromise, and the silencing of civil rights. However, he believes that Washington should have taken his ideas further to engender racial equality. DuBois believes that African Americans should fight for their rights by forcing the south to accept the mistakes they made in the past and strive to enforce the principles of the founding fathers who said that “all men are created equal.” DuBois also argues that African Americans must freely voice their opinion so that they can bring about social change.

I can see what both are saying but I am going to have to go with DuBois on this one. I believe that every who can have an education should indeed have one. Washington believed in gradual equality for black people, which means he wanted it to come slowly. Dubois wanted it right now and he didn’t want to wait. Washington was one to take it slow and work on getting respect and finance.

Du Bois was born in the North and faced very little discrimination, and had an easier time getting into College. They were well educated, and the only difference between them was how they were raised in different environments. Both were on the journey to improve African American’s social and political status in America. However, they had different methods for getting what they wanted.
Educating African Americans was frowned upon during Dubois time period, so for him to be advocating for them to be educated and not just working was something that was different to society. Dubois thought that work for African Americans was unfair. During that time period it was thought by society that African Americans should not be educated they should just work out in fields, cook, clean and everything else they did when they were slaves. The reason that these men differ in their views are pretty apparent and go back to the separate arguments that Jane Addams and Elizabeth Cady Stanton produced for women's rights in the 19th century. Jane Addams made some compromises in her push for women's suffrage to make her argument easier to swallow and take a small step towards equality. Stanton puts out her whole argument for total equality which made her argument hard for her generation to accept, but got all the problems on the table.
