Civil right smackdown Booker T. Washington vs. W.E.B Du Bois “We buy our way out of jail but we can't buy freedom.” A quote from Kanye's famous song, All Falls Down. In this verse Kanye is referring to how blacks can buy their way out of jail, but with all the money in the world they are still discriminated upon. Kanye is very similar to Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois, this being in modern day activist get their messages out in different forms, his being music the most influential form of art. During the late 1800’s to the mid 1900’s is the time African Americans started to demand civil rights. With this spark of civil rights came organizations to protect and create a safe haven for blacks. An example being the NAACP. Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois both wanted equality, even if that meant getting it at a different rate of time or different way. They were similar because they both had strategies for blacks to live their lives without fearing whites, as well as plans to gain equality. Furthermore the other ways both shared similar traits and ideas is they both established a group/system for blacks. W.E.B. Du Bois being the NAACP and Booker T. Washington's being the National Negro Business League. “Associate yourself with people of good quality, for it is better to be alone than in bad company”, This memorable quote from Washington shows how both him and Du Bois both relate in which they are both considered outcasts by being black and wanting black rights. Both of these organizations to help blacks and incorporate them into americas society. The most important similarity between the two is the overall push for civil rights, no matter how the plan looks, the only thing that matters is the long term and that's what both cared
