In the novel, Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, all of the boys on the island represent a factor of human society. Piggy represents wisdom and reason, Ralph as democracy and leadership, and Jack as corruption and authoritarianism. One of the less discussed roles of Lord of the Flies is Simon’s connection with religion- more specifically- the way he represents Jesus Christ. Throughout the entire novel, Golding makes it clear that Simon was modeled after the philosophy of Christ and the teachings of the Christian Bible. Though Simon spoke few words, he exhibited benevolence towards the other boys, mirroring the way Jesus gave to the poor and needy. Originally, Jesus Christ is said to have fed 5000. It is said that Jesus, by “Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves...They all ate and were satisfied...The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.”(Matthew 14:13-21, New International Version). The way Simon executes this message is after the littluns run after him asking for fruit. Following the path of Jesus, Simon fed the littluns when he “...found for them the fruit they could not reach, pulled off the choicest from up in the foliage, passed them back down to the endless, outstretched hands.” (Golding Pg 56).
