I am applying to the Master of Engineering program at Simon Fraser University’s School of Engineering Science with a concentration in Systems and Robotics. I am a first class graduate of Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Covenant University, Nigeria, and my academic goal is to combine my background in mechatronics and control systems with Intelligence techniques to build autonomous systems capable of making dynamic decisions. I believe my academic, industrial and extracurricular experiences provide me a good foundation to pursue graduate studies. My interest in systems and robotics surfaced during my undergraduate studies, after taking an introductory course in mechatronics. I found that there were many engineering problems which had been solved using techniques from mechatronics and control theory, and much more whose solutions could be inferred from the implementation of these techniques. I discovered that the use of automation, robotics, and standalone systems in our everyday activities was very possible, and I imagined a time when intelligence would be integrated into all kinds …show more content…
Firstly, as an avid participant in community service, SFU’s title of ‘Canada’s most engaged university’ captivated me, as it presented, quite succinctly, the community-centric culture of the university. My time as a member of the Hospitality Unit of Covenant University has helped me appreciate such cultures. For example, the ‘Food for All’ program, an initiative of the unit aimed at providing breakfast for all the students of the university, taught me valuable lessons in teamwork and the impacts of charity. It’s why I am eager to see in what ways I can actively engage myself. Secondly, the link to the industries via the Co-Op scheme I feel is invaluable, as it would present me with the opportunity to apply my skills in a practical environment—an important
