For my book, I decided to read Simon vs. the Homosapien’s Agenda by Becky Albertalli. I chose to read this book because its topic of coming out of the closet hits very close to home for me, and I saw the trailers for the movie, and became very interested. The book centered around the coming out story of 17-year-old Simon Spier. Early in the book, he starts exchanging emails with an unknown person at his school known as Blue. Soon, things turn sour for him when he accidentally leaves his emails with Blue up on a school computer, where Martin Addison takes pictures of them and threatens to out Simon if he does not help Martin get Abby Suso, (one of Simon’s best friends) to like him. As the story progresses, Simon’s relationship with Blue strengthens up to the point where Martin gets fed up with Simon and outs him on the school’s Tumblr page. Soon, Simon has no choice, but to reveal his biggest secret to the whole world. The whole process of him coming out is very hard, because he just wants to hang on to his old life for as long as he can because after he comes out, it will change forever. It is not nearly as easy as just deciding one day to change your life forever. Most people who end up coming out, however, say that they felt better after doing so. Some individuals in our world are not in an accepting enough world to come out though, and that is not fair. This got me thinking about how I can try to make the world a more accepting place where nobody even has to think twice about coming out. The Trevor Project is a non-profit charity that works with LGBT+ youth through crises and works to make the world a more accepting place.
