Yum! Sugar is a delicious and savory substance that is hard for almost everyone to resist, but most forms are quite unhealthy for your body. Sugars are classified as carbohydrates and is a generic term for multiple types and categories of sugar, such as simple or complex, fructose, glucose and sucrose. The first type of sugar is a simple sugar. Simple sugars are made up of one molecule, also known as monosaccharides, like fructose and glucose. An example of a monosaccharide is fructose, which is mostly found in fruit. It is extremely sweet, and even though fruit has many vitamins, too much can be unhealthy. When your body digests too much sucrose sugar, it is very bad for your body because most of it does not contain any nutrients such as protein, vitamins or minerals (too much glucose and fructose is bad for your body too, they just contain healthy substances). This causes the food to be mostly converted into fat, which can cause obesity and heart disease. A good amount of fat is healthy because your body needs a certain amount of it to function correctly, but when too much sugar is consumed, then too much fat is gained, this causes serious health issues.
I found this topic interesting because I like learning about the body and how to take care of it. What to eat and what not to eat, and how that affects us in the long run is also very fascinating. I think being healthy and eating right is a challenge that most of society has today, with diabetes, obesity, and weird diets that deprive the body of its essential needs, which is why I picked this topic of the chemistry of sugar.
