Sugar- the nation’s epitome of an unhealthy American diet. The evil that gives pleasure to the mouth, but does no justice to health. Needless to say, it is our nation’s drug, poison and everyone is addicted without having a grasp on the damage it has done in the past, is currently doing, and futuristically doing for our children and our children’s children. Sugar has taken a toll on our nation and has single-handedly become the substandard, ruinous enemy to our individual health.

Therefore, sugar is our nation’s addiction. Americans are culpable of being susceptible to addiction and to our oblivious and absent-minded nature to change it. When people think of addiction, they think of the TV commercials about smoking or the TV series Intervention where people are exposed to other people doing cocaine and popping pills on their living room couch. All Americans hoard their attention around every other addiction except sugar because we just think it is the natural way to go about life, that it is acceptable to reward ourselves every time we feel the need to or that it is acceptable to be uneducated about the amount of sugar consumed. Yes, there are TV series like My 600lbs Life, but that does no justice for the people that are on the show. That is asking for the people who are overweight and addicted to humiliate themselves in front of the entire world. The producers/creators of that series are ignorant of the fact that they do not help the person break away from their addiction, but, rather, emphasize it. It is said that “more than 70% of Americans eat AT LEAST 22 teaspoons of added sugar daily” (Richards). At least meaning the minimum and added meaning on top of the other sugars foods possess. Now, 22 teaspoons is not a terrifying number per say, but let’s say you had at least 22 teaspoons of added sugar daily for two years, that is at the bare minimum 16,060 teaspoons (334.58 cups) of added sugar AT THE MINIMUM. We do not realize and do not have the motivation to care enough or educate ourselves about the dangers of this addiction until it is too late. We do not discern ourselves to the effect of this
