New world slavery was, in most aspects, very similar to older forms of slavery. For one, both forms of slavery feature the use of dehumanizing devices to insult slaves, in addition to coming up with comic names for the slaves themselves. Additionally, fugitive slaves were made to wear metal collars, with domestic slaves wearing their own special uniforms. Most importantly, both forms of slavery feature the use of universal justifications to justify slavery. However, older forms of slavery provided equal opportunities for people no matter their ethnicity, with justification coming from the slaves sbeing of lower social status or from being prisoners of war. Thus, racism developed as a result of New World slavery requiring a new method of justification to continue. Initially, New World slavery was based on a need for new laborers. Morgan, “African slaves proved by far the best available labor supply.” African slaves were not chosen on the basis of ethnicity, but due to them being the best possible source for European labor.
