Smoking and cigarettes symbolize escape throughout the short story "Quitters Inc." by Stephen King. According to the characters McCann and Morrison, their difficulties in life are depicted throughtout. One example would be when Morisson was on his way to the treatment he smoked a cigarette. The treatment was intended to make him quit smoking which is a drastic change in his life, being used to smoking everyday to all of a sudden quitting. The cigarette symbolizes an escape to forget what he is on his way to do, he doesn't smoke cigarettes because he likes them as mentioned in the story after he smoked it he said "it tasted horrible". Throughout the story Stephen King foreshadows when Morrison seems interested in the Quitters Inc. program
