Progressive reform was a movement, dominated by the working middle class, in hopes of eliminating corruption in American Government. During the 1890s to 1920s, it was clear to see that people were being mistreated and abused by large corporations known as trusts. These businesses were manipulating prices, and even buying out competition in order to guarantee maximum profit, which put the consumers at the mercy of the company. It was important for Progressivists to target and eliminate these businesses and their bosses in order to effectively distribute money to the population; at this time, about three fourths of the population were classified as poor. The Progressive Era took place in 1890 to 1920. The Progressive Era started as a social movement and started to grow into a political movement. They also did not believe in social Darwinism. They believed that the worlds problems that society faced "(poverty, violence, greed, racism, class warfare)" could be prevented by having safe environments to live in, having a great education, and an efficient place to work. The "Progressives" usually lived in the big cities.
For example, people’s salary was spent on alcohol, led to physical abuse, sickness, and the hatred effects of drinking on families. Alcohol consumption would hurt workers’ efficiency, which some employers believed would happen. There were this movement which advocated the moderation or elimination of alcohol that were emerging from concerns it was called, “The Temperance Movement.” This movement were mainly led by women where two groups were created one in the year 1874 while the other in the year 1893 there names were the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and the Anti-Saloon League. This movement was supposed to only work out to cut alcohol consumption, but was later pressed for prohibition laws banning the manufacture, sale, and consumption of alcohol.

This caused for an increase in disagreements about the progressive reform. The ideas that the three historians had in the readings were quite interesting and they will cause people to rethink who the progressives really were. Joseph Huthmacher presented the idea in Urban Liberalism and the Act of Reform that people of the workforce that demanded for workmen’s compensation and wage laws were behind progressivism.
The progressive movement was put in place to help restore economic opportunities and correct injustices in America. The four goals of this movement were protecting social welfare, promoting moral improvement, creating economic reform, and fostering efficiency. Protecting social welfare included looking out for those in need and pretty much made sure that anyone struggling was provided with the necessities to help better their lives. Promoting moral improvement involved providing everyone with a positive look on their lives in America. To make this possible America felt it was necessary to implement what was called prohibition.
For, example, before they thought it was okay to drink/get drunk, but after they thought it was wrong and against their values. From the late 18th century to the early 19th century, progressives fought to draw attention to America's problems. From social, economic and political problems, Americans brought these issues to the government to listen to them. The progressive movement is dedicated to improving the lives of Americans by creating programs to provide relief. Some beneficial reforms that were important in the progressive era were the birth control movement, the Square Deal, and the temperance movement. The birth control movement was a social reform program that advocated for both the availability and acceptance of contraceptive devices.

During this era of progress, many people (mostly men) went to become alcoholics and drunks, which interfered with work as well as home (Brinkley 493). This movement aimed at abolishing alcohol, what progressives viewed as the main source of laziness among Americans. Another social issue that arose during the progressive Era was the development of settlement houses. These houses helped immigrants and their families adapt to the life in America. Social workers ran these houses, they were the educated middle-class young women of this time.
Due to the immense success of industry during the Progressive era, America’s booming economy and rising population fueled the growth of consumerism and its promise in American society. During this period, Americans, especially Immigrants, began to consider freedom as an “economic ambition” that allowed them to “achieve a standard of living” impossible in an impoverished society (Foner 557). One can argue that these economic beliefs about freedom contributed to the promise of mass consumption and the belief that freedom meant having access to the variety of goods produced by America’s thriving industry. During the Progressive Era, progressives called for reforms in many aspects of life, and the political reform was one of them. Progressives assumed the political needed fixing because the political parties used the old political machines to run their elections and control the whole process of those. In addition, the reformers claimed that a reform would help pass and exercise good laws, while get rid of the outdated ones. Therefore, the progressives initiated the political reforms. In responded to the pressure from the public, the state legislatures required the political parties to use a direct primary to choose the person who was getting elected.
Progressive tries to tackle many of the issues that we face today. The Progressive movement addressed the issues in factories and the liberties given to the people. With vast growth in population in concentrated areas came more technological advances. Many acts of legislation were passed during this era, especially those in the labor market. Reform means to make changes or to improve on something, typically a social, economic, or political issue or institution. During the Progressive Era, spanning from the late 19th to the early 20th century, the United States underwent significant transformations driven by societal, economic, and political upheavals. We need to reform because if we didn't reform and make changes to things throughout the years, then we would be making the same mistakes and we would never learn from them. Amongst this dynamic landscape, labor reform emerged as a critical agenda, addressing the injustices faced by workers in an industrialized nation. After the Civil War, our country was battered and beaten, but it rebuilt itself over time and spread its policies, as well as manufacturing practices, throughout our country. Early in the 20th century, members of our nation started to look at some of these practices and policies and began to question their merit and whether they assisted our population or not. Many people were involved in the progressive movement in America from the presidents to a slew of popular authors and photographers. The one thing that they had in common was that they saw problems with how various industries in our nation performed that they knew needed to be fixed. They did not always agree on everything, such as immigration, but they always had the nation’s best interest at heart.
Moral improvement occurred when reformers wanted immigrants and poor city dwellers to uplift themselves by improving their moral behavior (Danzer 513). A women 's group from Cleveland, the Women 's Christian Temperance Union, believed that alcohol undermined morals and led to bad behavior (Fagnilli 29). They believed the way to complete the moral goal was to make the country a “dry” country. Another prohibitionist group was the Anti Saloon League. This group endorsed politicians who supported banning alcohol, and organized state reform to try to ban alcohol.
