In the today’s society, there is a big discussion in America about whether or not is the American dream exist. Today, often people who live in the United States prefer to think that we are a nation that no longer social classes, and all the people are much better than those who were a long time ago. When different social classes are acknowledged, people prefer to ignore the inequalities that accompany them. However, social class has always been historically, and continues to be a major predictor for a range of social inequalities, connected with educational opportunities, work, and success. Isabel Wilkerson gives an example in her June 12, 2005 article “A Success Story That's Hard to Duplicate,” how Angela Whitiker’s has gone from welfare statistic to the middle class. She quoted Walter Allen, a professor of sociology at the University of California, Los Angeles who said, ‘She reflects a Horatio Alger kind of American dream story. The great news is that her efforts and initiative were rewarded. She got herself credentialed. The bad news is how challenging and how difficult it is to replicate her path’ (Allen). Wilkerson wants to prove that all people and especially black who usually meant to be poor, can succeed in this society. She shows how hard Whitiker’s life has been because she had children by other men. “The things going against this woman were phenomenal,” Professor McLanahan said. "Women who have children with other men are the least likely to find a mate." Angela Whitiker's climb is a captivating narrative of the life story of a woman who worked her way up from the lowest steps of society. “She is an object lesson," Professor Allen said. Many believe that if were born in a rich family then will be rich, and if in poor family then will be poor, for the whole life. Also, many think that race discrimination prevents succeed, but it is not true. To succeed in life people need endure hardship in life and work to overcome these problems and become a better person. However, people should not only use the hard work in order to impress others, but to achieve the goals that they set for themselves. In America, there are many people from other countries, and they are all different races. Regardless of whether they are white or black, many of them successful in their life, they have good paid jobs, and they achieved their goals by working honestly hard.
