Benefits
The social media can be a beneficial tool for relaying communications on the latest public health issues, ideas, or scientific paradigms which benefit communities worldwide. Such communications have been facilitated through the advancements in social media sites such as Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook. This analysis will focus on the usage of Facebook as a conduit of the spreading of communication for public health. As a public health practitioner, the site that was selected was Facebook for greater than three weeks, and the public health site selected to follow was the World Health Organization (WHO). For instance, if an individual has no interest in following the CDC or the WHO via Facebook, then communications on the latest outbreak, strategies, or basic news, then the individual or community will have to rely on the news, which may mean that the news would be received much later. The person delegated to update the social media page may be responsible for other tasks, this is especially common in local health departments, where public health practitioners such as epidemiologist, will be occupied with more pressing tasks than to update a feed at all moments. Another possible challenge would be a language barrier depending on the level of diversity of a community. For instance, if a community consists of a Latino population, the messages must be provided in Spanish or an indigenous language, depending from which country the target population is from. As for the current experience, following the WHO has proven that their message is conveyed in many languages such as English, Spanish, and other languages depending on the region followed.
