Click! Click! Growl! That’s the sound of a person’s stomach growling while they are taking pictures of their morning breakfast. It’s a good thing pictures don’t pick up sounds! When people think of social media the first thing they think about is, pictures. Thousands and thousands of pictures that are either food, family, friends, landscapes, or cute animals. Social media is not all about pictures, social media is much more than that. The article “Social Media’s Top 5 Contributions to Society” by Samantha Rupert and a video clip “Facebook Is ‘Ripping Apart’ Society” by CBS News Report are two sources about social media. Humans are creatures of habit, but they’re also opinionated and impatient. Those two traits alone are the reasons why social networks thrive. People want the news fast and they want to talk about it now.” This evidence is the strongest and most outstanding ethos that is given throughout the entire article because this ethos addresses the opposing view respectfully while using an inclusive tone. This strengthens the overall argument by including the audience while the author proves that they are aware of the other side besides their own. This makes the audience realize that the author not only did research and gathered information for their side but the author is aware of the negatives as well. This makes the audience feel more trust for this author, especially since the author is including them. The author including the audience is a major part of ethos as well, which makes this ethos strengthen the overall argument. This ethos hits the audience with a powerful introduction and makes the audience intrigued to read more. Samantha also uses the method of appeal, pathos very well. In the video, it showed mostly ethos by authorities of the subject kept appearing. This affected the other methods of appeal and made them weaker. The article had stronger ethos throughout their passage that didn’t affect the other methods of appeal. The article also showed strong pieces of pathos which touched and affected the emotions of others, while the video didn’t have this same effect and only made people feel shame throughout the video. People felt shameful of themselves and that they allowed themselves to continue using their devices everday. This wasn’t a very pleasant feeling to feel which made the video less persuasive. The video included a small portion of logos that appeared towards the middle. The article had logos throughout the passage, which had a bigger impact on the audience. These reasons and more made the article stronger and more effective than the video because of the unique and effective ways the author used the methods of appeal. The author shows that social media is a good thing and that it does not rip the society apart, unlike what CBS News Report claims. There is no more to fear about being on social media now that you know the benefits of it. Taking pictures of your meals is not a bad thing after
