There are many social norms that we live by. Some of these might include keeping your elbows off the table while eating, holding the door open for the person behind you, and saying “please” and “thank you.” One social norm I find fascinating is saying “you’re welcome” in response to “thank you.” Saying “you’re welcome” is the most common and well accepted phrases in response to someone saying, “thank you.” However, that norm is now frequently broken with the phrase “no problem.” Some, usually the older generation, do not like this word choice thinking that it is improper, and it bring more attention to the fact that they could have gone out of their way to do something for the other.
