In order for America to be good, our people must also be good. You cannot build a great country without a solid foundation. If someone was judging your character they would look at how honest you are, how much integrity you have, and how you treat other people regardless of what they can do for you. When people from other countries look at Americans do we want them to see money hungry bullies who only care about themselves or kind and compassionate people who they might aspire to
What does it mean to be an American? In the textbook, it says: “How one understands the Revolution often dictates how one defines what it means to be American.” (Pg 138-137 ywap ) I want to take this idea and relate it to all American history. It is understanding events such as the laws and events that built the idea of being an American. Especially today when topics such as these that our founding fathers built are constantly being contested and discussed.

What does it mean to be an American today? Being an American isn’t hard, but sometimes people just like to not follow things. First thing is being to say The Pledge of Allegiance in school than sitting down on your lazy butt. Second thing is being yourself. On May 16,2017 I interviewed Karina Salgado about what it means to be American to her. She is currently a preschool teacher at Acacia Tree Preschool here in Anaheim, but she also is studying to get her associate degree to become an elementary teacher. Karina stated throughout the interview that she's proud to call herself a chicana instead of an actual American. She also stated that she is the oldest of three and that her parents are both Mexican. Speaker, Theodore Roosevelt, in his speech, Duties of American Citizenship, establishes what a good American citizen should act like. Roosevelt’s purpose is to persuade people to fulfill their duties as a citizen of the United States. He adopts a positive tone in order to appeal to the audience. How can you change anything if you do not pull your own weight and strive to make the country better? If you ask anyone nowadays “what do you think your responsibility to america is?” you will most likely get a blank stare or something about paying taxes.
