We are still young and a little naive as a species and there are times when people forget that there are other ethnicities and cultures than their own. Before September eleventh in 2001 we did not really pay that much attention to people from the Middle East. That was a very negative first impression of the Arab people and also of Muslims. Before that there were people that didn't really know or care to know what to think of them, but they were not as afraid to learn as they are now. Due to this there is a stigma concerning educating oneself about these other cultures and we do not really listen to what the other cultures have to say. Even if they get around the loss of education in our school system, if they bypass the social stigma of educating oneself then they still have a few more obstacles to hurdle over before they can truly get around the stereotype that has been planted in many peoples head. They have to get around the fear of being wrong. Due to our fear of being wrong and offending people from other cultures then we tend to stay in our mindset even if we do not always agree with it. One thing that needs to change in our society for stereotypes to have less of a hold on us is for us to admit that we do not always have to be correct. There are many Arabs who would not mind if people talked to them. They also probably would not mind it if those people were wrong in their initial assumptions as long as those people were willing to give up those assumptions that keep us held back as a society. People need to be willing to communicate with them but also they should not put one person in a spotlight and think that everything that comes out of their mouth is true for the entire ethnic group. If we do not talk to others and admit that we are wrong and get over tiptoeing around other people's feelings but not communicating with them then we can not and more than likely will not progress as a society.
