Taking terrorism as an example, Maghaddam (2005) states that “focusing on those who are already at the top of the staircase i.e those who are already recruited into the terrorist organizations bring only short term solution. In long term, Moghaddam said should ”focus on generating contextualized democracies to increase an actual and perceived sense of voice and justice, thus prevent the potential to climb through the narrowing steps of the stairways to terrorism.” Here social psychology provides useful information on what motivates people to climb the stairways of terrorism, bringing out the cultural undertone that cause the conflict and frame how the issues of conflict can be conceptualized and subsequently solved. The Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria is being tackled through short term focus and it continues to spread its root. We have not really applied social psychological research to actually understand the reason behind their actions. Take for instance we know they are Muslim sects and the men suicide bombers are promised seven virgins when they die. Now we have also experienced a women suicide bomber, who knows what motivates the women, what their beliefs and ideology behind women suicide bombing.
