I used a number of interventions with this client. I gave this client homework and things to read over or think about at home regarding grief and loss and coping skills. One particular activity I used with this client, involved distinguishing good coping skills from bad ones. For homework after the coping skills activity I asked the student to think of 3 coping skills that he could use when he got angry and bring them back for our next meeting. The student was able to complete the homework and was also able to hone in on the fact that he enjoyed sports and recognized that those activities that he enjoyed could be a part of his coping skills. One diversity issue that this student had was in relation to his social class. This student was residing in a neighborhood that perpetuated violence and defiance towards authority figures. This example shown to this student, as a result of living in this neighborhood could contribute directly to his reasons for disregarding adults and being aggressive. This client’s young age has also impacted his problem and treatment directly. Because this client is of such a young age he may not fully understand the implications of his aggression and insubordination and what those things can lead to in his adult life. The age difference between me and my client definitely impacted treatment. The fact that I am a 24-year-old and he is only 11, made treatment difficult at times, because my level of knowledge and understanding of certain concepts was very different from his. My gender in relation to this student directly impacted treatment. The fact that I am a female, with a male student affected treatment directly also. I sometimes had trouble with picking activities or themes that would interest a young male student, as I am an older female without any kids. The fact that I do not have any children made it difficult to connect with what kids gravitate towards and understand better. Independent research allowed me to learn more about what males in this student’s age group like and gravitate towards. I was also able to research things that allowed me to see therapy through the perspective of a child and how to approach grief and loss topics specifically in a manner that catered to
